I make my stoppers from pre-bored corks placed over a dowel. They look more
authentic than the stainless jobs with o-rings or the plastic type. As far as
spoilage is concerned, these stoppers are for temporary storage of partially
emptied bottles and stored upright, not on their sides so there is no direct
contact with the wine. Their purpose is to prevent dirt, dust, bugs and
excessive air from entering. The remaining wine should be consumed within a
couple days or the wine will oxidize and taste like a dead mouse got in it. I
have used the same one for over 10 years with no problem. Once uncorked, the
bottle is emptied in a couple days.
