Greetings,

Some time ago I was able to view wreck posts in my news reader which
is Outlook Express. Now I can't do it at all. The wreck doesn't even
show up in the lists of groups. I have called my ISP and they know
nothing about newsgroups and were unable to help. I don't think they
believed me when I told them there was such a newsgroup.
Now I am viewing posts on Google which doesn't update very often and
when I post, it takes several hours to show up.
Can anyone help me to be able to view post in Outlook? Where should I
start?

Regards,
Charlie in Kentucky

I'm no expert but it works for me., however I use a different server than
you.

1. You have to create a news account linked to your news server. I assume
you have done this. Perhaps you could delete it and start over (recreate
it). I was directed to do that when I had problems with news groups. A
real pain!

2. Select the news server from your folder list. Click on the Newsgroups
tab and a Newsgroups Subscriptions window will open.

3. Select the newsgroup you want to subscribe to. Put in
"rec.woodworking" in the Display window and it will show all groups
containing the expression.

If no newsgroup is shown matching what you are after (i.e. rec.woodworking)
you are outa luck. My list shows it on my server.

If all else fails, try a free news reader, such as Xnews, which I have
switched to.

Did you recently install a router with a built-in firewall or firewall
software? If so, you'll have to open up the client side of port 119 (or
port 563 if using a secure server).

Assuming your NNTP server was (and still is) set up correctly, try
unsubscribing, rebooting, then resubscribing to the wreck.

If you are able to access other groups and simply not able to access the
wreck, then it is a problem with your ISP. I can't believe that they would
argue that this group exists. There is a fairly large amount of traffic on
this one. You may need to switch ISPs.

Thanks,

I downloaded Agent but rec.woodworking doesn't show up. Only slightly
over 1000 newsgroups show up and there are thousants. How can I view
them all?

Charlie

I see 43,453 groups, I suspect your ISP has some issues. Particularly if
both OE and Agent are having bother. What you might try is www.teranews.com
which has a very good free service. Yes, I said "free". IIRC you need to
give a credit card for ID purposes, I have had no problem in that regard.
Service fails only occasionally and it lets you download up to 50mb a day.

Just to let you know Charlie, if you subscribe to the regular free (50mb a
day) Teranews service, they charge a one time fee of something like $3.75 so
don't let it scare you off. Additionally, all newsgroup messages you view
onscreen are consuming that 50mb limit. So, don't subscribe to a bunch of
other newsgroups, because the 50mb will be used up really quickly and you
won't get any or all of your rec.woodworking if that's what you really want.

Suggest in agent you select online, sample headers from selected groups and
input or 3 or 4 days to retrieve. If you download all available headers,
there maybe too many to fit within the free 50mb limit. Any other questions,
feel free to email me privately.

You are downloading the groups that your ISP makes available to you. It
won't matter what newsreader you use, it will be the same list. Get your
ISP to add the wreck or get a new ISP.

http://freenews.maxbaud.net/

Follow this link. It lists many, many free news servers that you can use.
Some allow posting, some don't, so take a good look and pick one that suits
your needs.

Sounds to me like your ISP is actively monitoring/filtering (censorship?)
newsgroups from their news server. Or maybe they just don't know what the
f#$% their doing.
