Had some spare time today and had a peice of birch that wanted to become a
bowl.
Got to turning it and was pleasently surprised to see some just nice
spalting when I got inside it.
Getting down to the bottom of the inside - im sure everyone has done it -
just one more pass and pop - right thru the bottom.

I say a few choice words and decide to take a break - I pop it off the chuck
and debate about tossing it when the wife comes into the shop. She looks at
it and says - honey - thats a nice looking flower pot - its a good idea to
put the hole in the bottom for the water to drain.

You have to love a woman like that!

I did just that thing the other day myself. I'm new at this so every mistake
is devastating for awhile... so after my initial shock and disappointment
I came up with the same idea your wife did only I planned mine to hold
a plastic pot and made little feet so the pot can settle inside snugly.
It looks really neat and is just the thing when your bottom bottoms out!

Just remember one thing when you're creating wood art and you'll be just fine: "There are no mistakes or disasters when turning wood--only design alterations." I learned this early on (after I'd had my little tantrums while learning). Now, I never waste ANYTHING! Surprised)

Happy turnings!

I don't think that any of us has not done it! Don't like one little
spot. Let's clean it up and OOPS.

Here's another approach. If possible, flatten what's left of the
bottom and glue a block of contrasting wood to it. Continue turning
the inside till it looks right, then finish off the bottom outside.
Now you have another "Piece of Art!"

As always, "Just one OLD man's opinion", there are many other
approaches.

The Other Bruce

And as always, the joy of woodturning is that all you have to do is
remove what's not needed to have something beautiful. HMMMMMMM -
Maybe the original bottom wasn't needed? HMMMMMMMMMMMM

I met up with a fellow at a craft show. He had a bowl like this.
His also had a lid.
As perspective customers came up to his table
he would offer to show them this " unique " bowl. When the customer looked
at the bowl this guy would take off the lid,and he had his finger
sticking up through the hole.
He would than anounce, " This is a Finger Bowl "
He wouldn't sell that bowl, but told me he could have sold
25 that day. Jim
