Part of the problem is that woodturning, unlike most other crafts, is defined
by the technique that is used rather than the material i.e.: glass, metal,
ceramics and woodworking. Those people working in wood, making lathe based art
(perhaps lathe based is only their perspective) broadens the possibilities of
what can be done on the lathe. There are always articles on turning projects,
this month a rattle, the cremation urns, and others. Perhaps in careful
viewing of the work that you don't consider turning, there is a single design
element or technique that would be useful in your work, it is to easy to reject
it out of hand.

I think you're right. We are woodworkers and describing ourselves as ONLY
turners is probably too limited. But segmenting into a group of woodturners
versus cabinetmakers or general woodworkers is probably wise as it provides
a starting point for commonality and features more of what we often do.
